Why Hákon the Good?

Who Was King Hákon the Good?

King Hákon the Good (c. 920–961) was one of Norway's early kings and is remembered in the Norse sagas as a wise and respected ruler. Raised in the Christian court of King Æthelstan of England and later returning to rule a kingdom where the Old Norse religious tradition remained deeply rooted, Hákon sought to govern during a period of significant religious and cultural change.

Although his efforts to introduce Christianity met with resistance, the sagas portray him as a leader who valued wisdom, moderation, justice, and the pursuit of peace among his people. His life reflects the challenges of leading with conviction while preserving unity within a diverse community.

Why HHRK Bears His Name

Hákonar Highland Rim Kindred is inspired by the character and example attributed to Hákon the Good in the saga tradition. We do not claim him as a religious founder or perfect model. Rather, we see in his legacy qualities that continue to guide our own community: honor, humility, hospitality, courage, and a desire to cultivate frith—the bonds of peace, trust, and mutual obligation.

Like Hákon, we believe that sincere conviction can be joined with humility, and that faith is best practiced through integrity, service, and respect for others.

What Is Hákonarætt?

Hákonarætt literally means "the House of Hákon."

Historically, the word ætt referred to a family, lineage, or household. Within the Fellowship, Hákonarætt is understood as a spiritual household rather than a biological family. HHRK is the Founding Kindred of that household, serving Middle Tennessee as one local expression of the wider Fellowship.

Membership in Hákonarætt is not based on ancestry, ethnicity, nationality, or politics. It is a voluntary bond of shared devotion, fellowship, and mutual responsibility. We are united by our commitment to the Old Norse religious tradition and by our desire to build a community marked by honor, frith, hospitality, and lifelong learning.

How Hákonarætt Shapes Our Kindred

The idea of Hákonarætt reminds us that a kindred is more than an organization—it is a spiritual household.

It shapes the way we worship together, welcome guests, care for one another, resolve disagreements, and carry our traditions forward for future generations. It encourages us to honor the Gods, remember our ancestors, respect the landvættir, and strengthen the bonds of fellowship through shared ritual, study, service, and hospitality.

For HHRK, membership in Hákonarætt shapes our identity and our calling. As the Founding Kindred of the Fellowship, we seek to build a faithful, stable, and enduring religious community where people grow together in devotion to the Old Norse religious tradition while contributing to the wider household of Hákonarætt.

Hákonarætt Beyond HHRK

HHRK is the Founding Kindred of Hákonarætt Fellowship — one expression of this tradition, rooted in Middle Tennessee. But Hákonarætt is not limited to a single hearth. In time, other kindreds in other places may share this name, these principles, and this spiritual household while remaining distinct communities in their own right — bound not by geography or governance, but by shared faith, shared principles, and mutual frith. If your kindred or developing community shares the vision of Hákonarætt, we welcome the opportunity to begin a conversation about the Fellowship and its chartered kindreds.
